How To Ruin a Career

With just a video camera.

What do you get if you increase revenues for your company by over $5bn, boost operating profit from a loss to over $1bn a year and increase shareholder value by $30bn, all in the space of 5 years?

Answer: the sack.

The crime? You’re not Google.

Suicides. CD-ROMs.

Sunday June 17, 2007

Fact: 255 British soldiers were killed in the Falklands War. 264 soldiers later committed suicide.

Great blast from the past: the first ever internet marketing conference. The introductory speaker, Ken McCarthy, explains why the ‘internet business’ is better than the ‘CD-ROM business’ to a sceptical audience.  Features a young Marc Andreessen.

Wretched Rain

Saturday June 16, 2007

Saturday afternoon. Raining, which suits my mood. Just ate 2 sticky toffee puddings. Now wretching. Which also suits my mood.

Was supposed to be going to Paris today, but just couldn’t face the journey.  But have tackled the situation head-on…by not answering the calls of the person I was supposed to meet there.

Desperately Dodging The Sopranos

Monday June 11, 2007

Everything written about The Sopranos is true: it’s simply the best TV series ever and Shakespearian in significance. The very final episode screened on US TV last night. The final series hasn’t screened in the UK yet, so I don’t know the specifics but I know it’s ended on a cliffhanger – does Tony Soprano live or not?

99% of the blogs or magazines I read are American and 50% of these have postings on the final episode of The Sopranos. Most of these blogs, btw, are tech/new media related and nothing to do with mainstream TV, such is the crossover appeal of this series. My challenge for the next week or so is to avoid reading a blog that mentions the ending.

Fact: I’m a little out of my depth when talking about Shakespeare. I had to look up the spelling.

What Lesbians Like

Saturday June 9, 2007

Those lesbians know a thing or two about women: The Lesbian Hot 100 List.   Jodie Foster only made no 16 – weird huh?

Making a Buck

Thursday June 7, 2007

Great New York magazine article on where the profit comes from ‘for everyone from a drug dealer to Goldman Sachs’.

Seth Roberts thinks that seeing life-sized faces in the morning improves mood. Taking this as inspiration, alongside the desperate need to decorate my apartment after living there for over a year, I’ve decided to buy some photographic portraits. Here’s my list of faces. All are inspiring and some are, erm, stimulating, if you get what I mean.

  • Bill Clinton
  • Robert Kennedy
  • Bill Shankly
  • Kenny Dalglish
  • Gabriel Garcia Marquez
  • John Lennon
  • Stanley Kubrick
  • Stephen Fry
  • Mia Farrow
  • Burt Lancaster
  • Chuck D
  • Virginie Ledoyen

Pile-up on the coast road by Marbella. Not my fault. The car behind me, who was hit by the car behind him, rolled on his side a couple of times before eventually hitting me. A foot higher and it would have landed right on top of me and I’d be dead. Dead or worse.

Seems To Be The Hardest Word

Tuesday April 17, 2007

To all the women who’ve ever had anything to do with me, I’d just like to say:

It seems clear to me that I have expressed a degree of regret that can be equated with an apology
